    Glass formation and crystallization in high-temperature glass-ceramics and Si3N4

    The softening of glassy grain boundaries in ceramic matrix composites and Si3N4 at high temperatures reduces mechanical strength and the upper-use temperature. By crystallizing this glass to a more refractory crystalline phase, a material which performs at higher temperatures may result. Three systems were examined: a cordierite composition with ZrO2 as a nucleating agent; celsian compositions; and yttrium silicate glasses both in bulk and intergranular in Si3N4. For the cordierite compositions, a series of metastable phases was obtained. The crystallization of these compositions was summarized in terms of metastable ternary isothermal sections. Zircon formed at the expense of ZrO2 and spinel. In SiC composites, the transformations were slower. In celsian, two polymorphs were crystallized. One phase, hexacelsian, which always crystallized, even when metastable, had an undesirable volume change. The other phase, celsian, was very difficult to crystallize. In yttrium silicate bulk glasses, similar in composition to the intergranular glass in Si3N4, a number of polymorphs of Y2Si2O7 were crystallized.     Using Evidence in the development of local health policies : Some Evidence from the United Kingdom

    Objectives: This paper explores the use of evidence, focusing on economic evidence in particular, in the development of local health policies through an in-depth study of Health Improvement Programmes (HImPs) in England. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to the person responsible for coordinating the development of the HImP in each of the 102 English health authorities. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 HImP leaders, and a random sample of 26 HImP documents was reviewed using a standard pro forma. Results: Of the 102 mail questionnaires sent out, 68 (67%) were returned. It was found that those developing HImPs had multiple objectives, only some of which (e.g., efficiency in healthcare provision) would necessarily require evidence.Where evidence was used, this was a mixture of internal (experiential) and external (empirical) evidence, with the balance (66%) being in favor of the latter. Government reports and guidance from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), were the main sources of external evidence, rather than published papers. Key barriers to the use of economic evidence were lack of time and availability and the difficulties in synthesizing information at the local level. Conclusions: Based on responses to our survey, the main ways of increasing the use of evidence in the development of local health policies in England are to produce more evidence-based national guidance and to produce accessible summaries of the available literature for local decision makers

    Modeling of supersonic reacting flow fields

    A detailed understanding of the scramjet combustor flow field is critical to the achievement of a successful design. Even though the combustor flow field is quite complex, it can be realistically viewed as a collection of spatially developing and reacting supersonic mixing layers that are initially discrete, but that ultimately merge into larger more complex zones. These mixing layers begin downstream of a set of fuel injectors that introduce gaseous hydrogen in both a parallel and transverse direction into a supersonic air stream entering from the engine inlet. The behavior of the initial portion of the combustor flow, in the mixing layers near the fuel injectors, appears to be most critical, since this is where the mechanism for efficient high speed mixing must be established to achieve the required degree of combustion downstream. Because of the structure of the flow field in this initial portion of the combustor, a single supersonic, spatially developing and reacting mixing layer serves as an excellent physical model for the overall flow field. Even though this reacting mixing layer flow is geometrically simple, it can still be made to retain all of the fluid mechanical and chemical complexities present in the actual combustor flow field
